5 Server Monitoring Tools Worth Your Time

We sat down with Marcus Chen, a DevOps lead managing over 300 cloud instances, to talk about monitoring tools that have saved him from disaster.

What's your go-to monitoring stack these days?

Honestly, I keep coming back to Prometheus paired with Grafana. The flexibility is unmatched when you need custom metrics. For log aggregation, I'm running the ELK stack, though it eats resources like crazy.

The Tools He Actually Uses

  1. Prometheus with Grafana - His primary metrics collection setup, especially for Kubernetes environments
  2. Datadog - Expensive but catches things others miss, particularly for distributed tracing
  3. New Relic - Application performance monitoring when debugging becomes necessary
  4. CloudWatch - Can't avoid it for AWS infrastructure, despite the interface
  5. Nagios - Still running it for legacy systems that predate the cloud migration

What catches most teams off guard?

Alert fatigue. Everyone sets up monitoring, then drowns in notifications. I spend more time tuning thresholds than setting up the initial configuration. Start with monitoring disk I/O and memory pressure before you get fancy with custom metrics.

The best tool is whichever one your team will actually check daily.
